If Sciatica is a problem for you, our Physiotherapists can help help you solve it.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain or other symptoms in the lower back that radiates down the back of one or both legs. Sciatica symptoms can include pain, hot and cold sensations, pins and needles, numbness, or muscle weakness in the lower back and/or leg.

These symptoms are due to pressure on the Sciatic Nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the glute and down the hamstring, calf and foot. Pressure on the Sciatic Nerve can be due to:

  • A lower back joint irritation
  • A disc bulge in the lumbar spine which impinges on the nerve roots that form the Sciatic Nerve
  • High muscle tone through the back of the hip, in particular through the Piriformis muscle.

Sciatica can be debilitating. Furthermore, the longer it is left alone to rest, the worse it can get. Therefore, it’s important to get in touch with your Physio early, so they can develop a plan with you to work through the Sciatica and improve your symptoms.
